Slowly, something in the fire moved. A girlish giggle floated around the room.

Ryland stiffened at the sound. There was one flaw in his plan: he'd forgotten how little girls were and how much he hated children.

Victoria's hair flew back from her face as the room was filled with a blinding light.

Ryland felt a twinge of something that anyone else would have called fear.

There was thump as something hit the floor, and suddenly everything went dark. The window didn't let any light in, all the bulbs blew and the fire went out.

Victoria watched expectantly. There was a whimper from the corner of the room and something moved.

Ryland gave up on the lamp and reached for where he was sure the matches were before to light a candle. He'd need to get new bulbs to replace the blown out ones.

"Angel?" Victoria whispered, reaching for Ryland's hand.

"Daddy?" Angel whimpered.

Ryland lit a candle and held it up as he took Victoria's hand. "Hello Angel."

The naked little girl twisted around, hissing at the light. "Where's Daddy?"

"He's not here right now," Ryland held the light a little away to give the little girl time to adjust. He'd need to send down for something for her to wear.

"Where's Papa?" Was inevitably her next question. "Who are you?"

Victoria smiled softly. "My name's Victoria honey. You're Angel, right?"

"Your Papa isn't here either. I am Ryland." He moved to grab a blanket to offer the girl.

Angel wrapped the blanket around her shoulders, looking around in confusion. "Uncle Ryland? Why aren't I with Daddy and Papa?"

"Uncle Ryland?" Ryland arched an eyebrow and smiled a small, confused smile. He was already starting to feel a little uncomfortable.

Angel thought. "Blue."

"Dizzy." Angel swayed. "Hungry."
